How to choose the right abrasive: material, grit and finish
Choosing the right abrasive depends on three factors: the material you're working with, the type of operation (cutting, grinding or finishing) and the surface finish you want to achieve.
Stainless steel calls for abrasives free of iron and sulphur, to avoid contamination that can lead to corrosion. On aluminium and other soft metals, a more open grit works better, reducing disc clogging.
Grit size affects the result: a coarse grit removes more material and suits heavy grinding work, while a fine grit is used for finishing before painting.
Diameter and thickness also need to match your machine: a disc that isn't compatible with your grinder gives worse results and is dangerous to use.
